Interscholastic Athletics
Interscholastic Athletics
Interscholastic activities in Williamson County Schools are an important part of the overall educational process. The athletic programs offer students expanded learning opportunities including self-discipline, self-esteem and teamwork. Students who participate in extracurricular activities tend to get higher grades, have better attendance and pose fewer discipline problems.
All Williamson County high schools offering interscholastic sports are members of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and abide by its constitution and by-laws in addition to the applicable policies of the Williamson County Board of Education. The middle schools belong to the Williamson Middle Athletic Association (WMAA) and abide by its constitution and by-laws as well as the applicable policies of the Williamson County Board of Education.
The opportunity to participate in WCS athletic programs is extended to all students who meet the eligibility requirements of the TSSAA, policies of the Williamson County Board of Education and/or guidelines set forth by the WMAA. Before participating, students are required to have a physical on file dated after April 15 and complete the Final Forms process.
Multiple club sports that are not sanctioned are offered at WCS schools. Sports and locations vary. WCS offers the following sanctioned sports at the 6-12 levels:
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Bowling (High School Only)
- Cheerleading
- Cross-Country
- Dance
- Football
- Golf
- Soccer
- Softball
- Tennis

Girl's Soccer
Eligible Grades: 6th, 7th and 8th
Tryout Information: Dates TBD – Usually late September
Meet in Coach Oldham’s room (600) after you dress on the 1st day of your tryout. It is essential that you be on time and prepared for your tryout. You should be wearing soccer attire (cleats, shin guards and shorts). Do not wear cleats inside the building. Water will not be provided. Please bring your own water bottle. If for some reason you cannot attend one of your tryout days, please see Coach Oldham ahead of time. Player pick-up will be in the car rider line in front of the school.
Some of the skills I will be looking for are:
- Ball control (through cones)
- Speed with ball
- Shots on goal
- Stamina
- Game skills (in short sided and full games)
- Most importantly… Attitude
General Information: Before you can play Grassland Soccer you must have an updated physical on file with the school or on Final Forms. As usual, the team will be divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity squads and around 30 players (total) can be accepted.
Furthermore, if you can’t commit to being at practices and games every Monday through Thursday as well as working hard, and being a team player, then this is not the team for you. Good luck to all of you and I look forward to another great year of Lady General’s Soccer.
A list of players who made the team will be on the Grassland Girls’ Soccer Team Google Classroom. Ask Mr. Oldham for the code.

2024 Cross Country Information
NOTE: All runners must be registered in Final Forms with a current physical uploaded before practices begin. Please make sure students log in with their WCS username and password to complete their portion of the forms, too.
Required items to wear and bring to practice:
- Running shorts & t-shirt/tank-top
- Running shoes and socks
- Full water bottle
Weather:
Practices and meets will be cancelled if the heat index is greater than 104 degrees. Parents will be contacted through Final Forms. We will only reach out to the parent that is registered in Final Forms. If you want both parents to be contacted, please be sure to update in your account.
Expectations:
- All students will be allowed to participate if they are academically eligible and meet time requirements throughout the season.
- For athletes to participate in meets, athletes must run a 12-minute mile in a time trial. There will be ongoing time trials for all runners who don’t meet this initially. All students are welcome to practice regardless of their timed runs.
- Athletes should be able to run one mile without walking on the first day of practice.
- Meets will be 2 miles since we are now members of the TMSAA.
- We will not accept new athletes AFTER Aug 11th.
Schedule:
Practice: occurs every MONDAY, TUESDAY and THURSDAY in which school is in session. We will practice immediately after school until 4pm. Athletes will change and meet at the GMS track.
Meets: occur each Wednesday at various locations throughout the county. They typically begin at 4pm (girls race first). Coaches will provide information about location/times once we receive them from the host team.
Please be aware that race locations and start/end times may vary. Traffic is often a concern that requires advance preparation. GMS does NOT provide transportation to any events.
Football
Grassland Middle School has two football teams - Varsity and Junior Varsity. The varsity team consists primarily of 8th grade players. The Junior Varsity team includes mostly 7th graders with the potential for some 6th grade players - depending on size and skill level. Practices and games will run until the end of September.
Grade Levels:
Students at all grade levels (6th, 7th and 8th) are eligible to tryout and participate.
Expectations:
Students interested in playing football should be prepared to practice every day in the heat and be willing learners of the game. Our team has players of all sizes, skill levels and previous football experience that strive to better themselves every day in practice. While not all players are big, strong, and fast, there is no substitute for these intangibles. Players should note that our standards of conduct and commitment are high throughout the season. Competition for roster spots is highly competitive.
Tryouts (If required):
Football tryouts are a process and conclude in early July. Tryouts consist of various non-contact drills and participant commitment to decide the best players for the roster. Before students can tryout, they must upload a sports physical to Finalforms and the "parent" portion of Finalforms must be completed.
Contact Information: For questions concerning GMS Football, please contact Head Coach Dale Nichols.
